HYPERSENSITIVE STUDY

A hypersensitive skin study “patch test” using helix aspersa muller extract was conducted on 31 patients. Among the study group were patients already known to be hypersensitive to medication or food.
To perform the study sensidiscs were used along with cellulose paper impregnated in helix aspersa muller extract as well as those impregnated in Elicina. Therefore, patients had 2 sensidiscs separately containing each the above mentioned taped to their forearm some 5 cms. just below the elbow. The discs were taped on continuously during 48 hours and results were obtained 96 hours later.
87,2% of statistically significant results were obtained among patients who showed no reaction whatsoever. Among the above were 16% of patients who previously had reported a medical history regarding hypersensitivity. A greater margin of successful results is obtained if extract and Elicina are analyzed separately (93, 6% vs. 90, 4% respectively). The smaller percentage obtained with the cream can be explained by the presence of Lauryl sulphate, a necessary excipient that helps the cream obtain its lathery effect needed to massage and absorb the finished product through the skin. Another unfavorable aspect to consider is the continuous 48 hr. concentrate application of extract and cream to a specific skin area, much unlike normal application conditions which also may favor hypersensitivity.
